ITIL V3 Refresh - latest news

Following the decision in 2005 to refresh and update the current version of ITIL, a detailed consultation process determined that whilst ITIL V2 was still very much applicable, certain enhancements would add value and ensure that the methodology continues to be fully relevant as we move into the 21st century.

The first draft of the five core books in the lifecycle has been produced and internal QA completed by the ITIL Advisory Group. Subsequently, the publications have now been passed to a selected international QA panel for wider review, with the next stage being for the authors to consider the review comments and amend the publications accordingly before sending the books to the TSO copy editors for a final edit before publication.

The first book in the lifecycle is Service Strategy, which looks at the overall business aims and expectations ensuring the IT strategy maps onto these.

The second publication is Service Design which starts with a set of new business requirements and ends with the development of a solution designed to meet the documented needs of the business.

Third on the list is titled Service Transition which is concerned with managing change, risk and quality assurance and has the objective of implementing service designs so that service operations can manage the services and infrastructure in a controlled manner.

The fourth book in the lifecycle is Service Operations which is concerned primarily with 'business as usual' activities.

The final publication is Continual Service Improvement which has an overall view of all the other elements and looks for ways in which the overall process and service provision can be improved.

All ITIL v2 exams will be available until at least the end of the year as the final design of the structure and syllabus for ITIL v3 has not been finalised or agreed.
